Trying To Get Pregnant

A Solution To Difficulties In Trying To Get Pregnant

No one wants to have IVF infertility treatment, but if you’re reading this article the chances are that either you, or someone close to you, is not having any success in trying to get pregnant naturally and may be facing the prospect of one of several infertility treatments. We like to imagine that IVF treatment is something that happens to other people, and hope that we’ll be pregnant long before we get that far down the line, but since IVF started in the 1970s thousands of people around the world have found that it can offer the hope of a solution to their fertility problems.

You may understand the medical procedures, you may have spent a lot of time finding out about other people’s experiences, but you probably don’t know so much about what goes on behind the scenes during an IVF cycle, about the people involved in treatment and about their perspective on the process. The more insight you have into the use of IVF for trying to get pregnant, the less daunting it will seem.

I’m only too aware of how alarming the prospect of going through IVF can be. I was 30 when we started trying to get pregnant. We had always known we wanted a family one day, but once we finally felt the time was right and began looking forward to having children of our own, we found we couldn’t conceive. Month after month passed, and I decided to take the matter in hand, expecting to be able to find a cause and a solution for the problem fairly rapidly. Instead, I soon learned there are rarely easy answers or quick fixes when it comes to infertility.

Our infertility remained unexplained despite endless tests, and eventually it was suggested that IVF might be the best way ahead. I was still hoping I would miraculously get pregnant naturally at the last minute, but in the meantime I set about finding out all I could about what would be involved.

At the time the Internet was still in its infancy, and there wasn’t the easy access we have now to research, information, and, perhaps more importantly, to the experiences of other people who have already been through fertility treatment themselves when trying to get pregnant.

I learned more about the issues involved as I met fertility experts, and spoke to other patients. Although I now had a baby through successful IVF treatment, I was still very aware that I was unable to conceive naturally.

I had secretly hoped we would be one of those couples with unexplained infertility who go on to have children naturally following successful IVF, but after a couple of years of trying to get pregnant we had to accept it wasn’t going to happen, and went back to the fertility clinic.

We still had embryos in the freezer, and we worked our way through them, and had another unsuccessful fresh IVF treatment before our fifth frozen embryo cycle led to a positive pregnancy test, and the birth of our daughter.
