IVF Success Rates
When you interview IVF clinics, it is important to ask about their IVF success rates.
This will let you know how successful the clinic is at producing pregnancies. The most important IVF success rates are the number of take-home babies per year and the number of live babies born per cycle. (The number of pregnancies can be a deceiving statistic because many may fail early in the IVF pregnancy stages.)
Keep in mind that some clinics may not have high success rates because they focus on difficult-to-treat problems or because they use last ditch methods that may be a couple’s only hope. Make sure you understand why a clinic’s numbers are what they are.
Initial Visit
When you visit a fertility specialist, it is important to bring medical records, test results, and reports with you. Both partners (if you are part of a couple) should be at the first visit so that both can meet the doctors and ask questions. Ask yourselves if you feel comfortable with the people you meet there and with the general atmosphere. You also need to be frank with yourselves about what you can afford. Try to get clear answers about IVF success rates. Evaluate what you are told with a critical eye.
When you first meet with a fertility specialist, it is a good idea to have something to write on and to bring a list of questions with you. You are entitled to ask the staff anything you want. There are no restrictions on the types of questions you can ask. It is important to not only get hard information about the clinic, their IVF success rates, the doctor’s qualifications, and the treatments available, but also to get an impression as to whether this is someone you are comfortable working with and relying upon.
You can expect to complete a family medical history and your personal medical histories (with an emphasis on your reproductive health), and perhaps undergo an exam and tests at your first visit.
